Alkaline Trio have announced their first studio album in six years, Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, out January 26th, 2024 via Rise Records. Along with the announcement, they also unveiled plans for a 2024 tour and shared the lead single, “Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs.”
The follow-up to 2018’s Is This Thing Cursed? was recorded by the band at a number of studio sessions with producer Cameron Webb, and takes its title from stories that vocalist Matt Skiba remembers from his childhood. “My mom worked for years as an emergency room nurse,” he said in a press statement. “She and her co-workers referred to exceptionally busy nights as ‘blood, hair, and eyeballs.’ Well, we’ve been busy making an exceptional record we refer to as Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, too.”
Continuing, Skiba explained that the album’s sound was inspired by the process through which the band recorded it. “We approached this new record in completely new ways,” he said. “We built the songs together, from the ground up, in the same room which hasn’t happened since the band started. Usually we start with an idea somebody’s already written. This time, we had the unique opportunity to build the songs onto drums recorded at Studio 606 on to two-inch tape using one of the most beautiful-sounding and legendary consoles in rock. It has almost everything to do with how our new record sounds.”
Alkaline Trio’s 2024 North American tour kicks off on February 22nd in Anaheim, California, and includes stops in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago, DC, and more before wrapping on March 30th in Las Vegas. Joining them will be new drummer Atom Willard, after Derek Grant recorded his parts for Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs and then departed from the group this past June. Drug Church will open on all dates. The lead single, “Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs,” reflects Alkaline Trio’s fresh approach, presenting a stripped-back arrangement with energy fit for a live punk show. Verses bring the dynamics down, and build into a chorus that can easily be imagined as a mosh pit sing-along, with lyrics like, “I got nightmares up and down my walls/ I got some things that I should say/ Walk like a zombie up and down these halls/ Sleep like the undead, like the undead/ At the end of the day.”
“Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs” arrives alongside a music video featuring the band playing the tune in a skatepark-turned-zombie nightmare, fighting off the undead. Watch it below.
Pre-orders for Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs are ongoing.
