Laura Jane Grace has announced her second full-length studio album, Hole in My Head, which is due for release on February 16th, 2024 via Polyvinyl Record Co. She’s also shared the album’s title track as a single, and unveiled a string of new tour dates for 2024.
Grace’s first collection of songs since 2021’s At War with the Silverfish, Hole in My Head will feature the single “Dysphoria Hoodie,” which first debuted this past October. Written 30 years removed from the days when her band Against Me! was first beginning, the album captures the sense of reflection that she’s been leaning into recently.
The single “Hole in My Head” conveys this, pairing a stirring, youthful melody with lyrics bearing the wisdom of Grace’s years. “You can try to outrun all the pain you come from/ That would be a real mistake” she sings on the bridge, building into the chorus’ refrain of “I need a hole in my head/ I won’t learn to feel less.”
“Hole in My Head” also arrives alongside a music video directed by Gilbert Trejo, son of Danny Trejo, which pays homage to the liberating power of music. Watch the video below.
As a whole, Hole in My Head reflects the circumstances of Grace’s life when she was making it. It was written in a variety of locations, and recorded in St. Louis, Missouri, while she was staying in a place formerly owned by Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo. In a statement, she explained that being in St. Louis played a role in how the album ultimately came out.
“St. Louis really opened its arms to me and I just have such a great time when I’m there,” she said. “It’s a really special city. To me, it feels like the way every city in America felt when I first started touring in the late ‘90s, and this crazy mix of fun and adventure, but danger and possibility.”
Pre-orders for Hole in My Head are ongoing.
Up next, Grace will play a handful of shows in December, and will then embark on a wider tour in 2024, hitting cities in Greece and across North America. Tickets are available here. Check out the full list of Grace’s upcoming dates below.
