This past July marked 10 years since Thundercat released his sophomore album, Apocalypse. Now, the virtuoso bassist is commemorating the release with a deluxe reissue, titled Apocalypse 10-Year Edition, due on March 1st, 2024 via Brainfeeder.
Produced by Flying Lotus, the original Apocalypse featured 12 tracks, all presenting Thundercat’s unique sound and capacity for expression. The reissue will arrive with two previously-unheard bonus tracks: “Before I loved myself ‘I’ pooped my ankles (true)” featuring Taylor Graves and Thundercat’s late collaborator, Austin Peralta; and “Paris” featuring Mono/Poly.
Thundercat and Peralta were close collaborators, with the latter appearing on the former’s debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, in 2011. Peralta’s death in 2012 at the age of 22 hit Thundercat particularly hard, which influenced Apocalypse.
The deluxe version of Apocalypse follows the reissue of Thundercat’s debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, for its 10th anniversary in 2021. When the new record arrives in March, it will be available on a deluxe, colored vinyl, featuring “special rainbow holographic artwork” inside a transparent slipcase with an “‘x-ray’ holographic skull print” overtop the original artwork. Earlier this year, Thundercat performed at the 2023 Newport Jazz Festival, tapped Tame Impala for a new song, “No More Lies,” and did a good bit of touring. This past September, he shared a song made with mouthwash sounds as part of a Listerine campaign supporting a non-profit that creates more opportunities for diversity in dentistry.
Next year, he’s set to continue touring, and will head to Europe for a handful of dates in March and April, including stops in Ireland, the UK, Germany, and more. Grab tickets here.
