It’s one thing for a song to stand the test of time, but few songs have the combined legacy, staying power, and influence of Run-DMC’s all-time classic “It’s Tricky.” Instantly recognizable and still thoroughly enjoyed to this day (just ask TikTok), the Raising Hell single stands as not only one of Run-DMC’s best joints, but one of the most significant hip-hop tracks of all time.
On this special Hip-Hop 50 episode of The Story Behind the Song, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, one third of the legendary group alongside Joseph “Run” Simmons and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, joins host Peter Csathy to talk about the song’s history, reception, and eventual iconic status. Additionally, DMC chats about the array of the group’s influences (including Kraftwerk), the comic book origins of his moniker, and the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.
DMC then goes on to preview his work with Park City Song Summit, the upcoming event held in Park City, Utah, that fuses mental health awareness, creative workshops, and live music. You can win VIP tickets to the September 7th-9th festival via Consequence here, or get 20% off all ticketed events by using the code SUMMIT here.
