Spooky season now extends through the fourth Thursday in November with Thanksgiving, the upcoming slasher from Eli Roth. Sony Pictures has shared its official trailer before it comes to theaters November 17th.
Technically, this could be considered the second Thanksgiving trailer that’s seen the light of day: Back in 2007, Roth made a faux trailer to be presented in the middle of Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s double feature. Also titled Thanksgiving, that hypothetical movie took cues from holiday-themed horror classics like Halloween and My Bloody Valentine, with its killer dressed as a pilgrim. (Grindhouse also featured a fictional trailer for Machete, which Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis expanded into a full-length movie in 2010.)
The 2023 Thanksgiving isn’t quite as obviously indebted to ’70s exploitation flicks, but like its first iteration, it centers around a series of murders in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A year after a local Black Friday sale became a literal bloodbath, the entire town is on edge once again as they attempt to stop the pilgrim-clad killer, who has a knack for carrying out his executions with everyday kitchen items — ovens included.
The film stars Patrick Dempsey and TikTok personality Addison Rae, while Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Gershon help round out the cast. Watch the Thanksgiving trailer below.
