Yellowstone will now premiere the second half of its fifth and final season on Paramount Network in November 2024 after delays due to behind-the-scenes drama and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Additionally, Taylor Sheridan’s franchise will be expanding with yet another prequel series currently titled 1944 and a previously announced sequel series with the working title 2024.

The highly popular neo-Western was originally slated to air its final episodes in November 2023, but tensions mounted between series creator Sheridan and star Kevin Costner over the actor’s shooting schedule, which he recently claimed to have rearranged around his passion project, a multi-part film series called Horizon: An American Saga.

It’s unclear whether Costner has worked out a deal to appear in the second half of Yellowstone Season 5, but Deadline reports that “it is possible for him to be in Yellowstone’s final episodes.”

Yellowstone will be followed by the debut of 2024 in December. Matthew McConaughey is expected to star in 2024 and be joined by actors from the original series, though that has not been confirmed as of yet. Not much is currently known about 1944, except that it will follow in the footsteps of the previous prequels 1883 and 1923 in telling the Yellowstone origin story. As with the previous spinoffs, 1944 and 2024 will both air on Paramount+.

“Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions — and we’re just getting started,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios. “On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new, and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”

Sheridan’s latest Paramount+ series, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, is set to premiere on November 5th. It stars David Oyelowo as the first Black deputy US Marshal west of the Mississippi.
