Track by Track is a recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through every song on their latest release. Today, Becca Mancari takes us through their latest record, Left Hand.
Becca Mancari returns today (Friday, August 25th) with their third full-length album, Left Hand. A collection of tracks journeying through love, queerness, family, and trauma, Left Hand may have been born from despair, but it always strives towards hope.
Over delicate, indie pop instrumentation, Mancari’s vocals imbue their songs with a certain vulnerability. On their follow-up to 2020’s The Greatest Part, they mine from their tumultuous relationship with their family, the harmful experiences from their past, and the grey area of reconciling with people who have hurt them, all while maintaining a tangible sense of love and empathy.
“I know for me, my mom getting cancer really made me stop and see her… even though she hurt me so badly when she rejected me from her life for so long when I came out,” they say of the song “I Needed You.” “I know that I could never have written this song without first doing therapy and finally saying, I know we’ve hurt each other, but we’re running out of time.. I want to know you in this life.”
Mancari, who Consequence CoSigned in June 2020, also makes space to express gratitude and admiration for those in their life they feel connected to. From their partner to Brittney Howard, friends and accepting love ones serve as a bright, shining light helping Mancari — and the listener — along the way.
“The whole theme of the song is that these friends are saying, Hey, I see you. I know you’re exhausted from fighting for your life, and I GOT YOU. I will carry you over my shoulder if I need to… you’re not alone and I will watch out for you when the world is trying to drag you down,” they tell Consequence about opener “Don’t Even Worry.”
