Welcome to Mixtapes, a new video series from Consequence that peeks into artists’ tastes by asking them to soundtrack absurd situations. For this special episode, we met Joy Oladokun, Dumpstaphunk, and Pixie & the Partygrass Boys at Bourbon and Beyond Festival ’23 to make the perfect playlist for a selection of whiskey-based cocktails.

There’s nothing like sitting back with a good whiskey cocktail and some good tunes. So when we went down to the 2023 Bourbon and Beyond Festival, we brought along our new Mixtapes series to get our favorite artists to come up with a playlist for our favorite mixed drinks.

We sat down with Joy Oladokun, Dumpstaphunk, and Pixie & the Partygrass Boys with our big ol’ fishbowl, this time filled with delicious cocktail recipes instead of outrageous situations. Each artist reached on in, pulled out a drink, and then provided just the right song to soundtrack a sipping session.

So what to put in your ear holes while you’re putting a classic old fashioned into your mouth hole? Oladokun suggests Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” while Katia “Pixie” Racine goes with Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon.” For the rich and creamy milk Punch, Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville says “That’s the Way (I Like It)” from KC and the Sunshine Band sets the mood, and Oladokun highlights the reimagined version of Brittany Howard’s “13th Century Metal.” As for a whiskey on the rocks, the great Tony Hall has an immediate answer: The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.”
