Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier join Kyle Meredith to talk about their movie They Cloned Tyrone, which follows three friends as they uncover an underground government cloning operation running experiments in their town.

The filmmakers, who co-wrote the film with Taylor also handling directing duties, talk about the feelings that go along with helming their first major picture, the fun of coming up with the small and specific character traits of clones, and watching viewers make fan art after experiencing the movie.

The duo also discuss the underlying messages of the story and why it’s fun to write about conspiracies. They wrap up by chatting about deciding on the funk and R&B soundtrack and how they got Erykah Badu to re-record “Tyrone.”

“We pitched the movie without a script, but we pitched Erykah Badu doing the last song, so we always joked that she was there before the script was there,” Taylor explains. “The second we decided to really call it They Cloned Tyrone, the next decision made was: Obviously Erykah Badu has to remake ‘Tyrone’ for us in some kind of way.”
