Perhaps if you concentrated on the tracks themselves rather than historical matters you might talk some sense.

I’m inclined to think that this album won’t hit home with me, as I havent really gotten into post-Waters Floyd or Gilmours solo stuff, but who knows? Guess I’ll have to listen to find out!

Just write tripe and intellectualise, get angry and venomous towards an obvious talent and your well on the way to stardom. I hope no one is paying you for this drivel.
The album has colour and depth. It is broad in range. Yes it is not what you expect on first listening. It is not another DSOTM. Of course you are going to hear some of Dave’s past, his influences etc. But its different, a whole new time in a different space with different folks. I have followed this guy since the get go and he is a brilliant musician who has produced another wonderful piece of work. Just listen to everything PF has done and every thing Dave has done then drop the judgemental stuff and then write your review again. Hopefully it will be an objective constructive critique. Rattle That Lock boyo.

Instead of this short description of David Gilmour – while comparing him to Roger Waters before and after the Pink Floyd years, in everything they achieved – this incompetent Buchanen dude should have said that if Gilmour plays in the same tune as he did during the Pink Floyd years, hum maybe that would be because he HIS the sound that Pink Floyd was. So, why would he start to play and sing some rap music now, David Buchanen? I’m sure that you would be very pleased with that. What is more relevant to write is… how the hell David Buchanen has a job? How the hell exists a kind of boss that is capable of paying David Buchanen to write sh*t? Maybe they share the same intelligence… Well congratulations to you, guys!

Bern,
Just because a song is catchy doesn’t make it bad. Have you actually read the lyrics? There is some pretty cool and weird stuff in that song. And the chorus sinks in the hook. Nothing wrong with that

Brad,
Thank You, i love this album, but i respect all the tracks for what they are, i think the reviewer should as well, and take into account that David Gilmour is not about to do a Hip-Hop style album any time soon….because this is what he does….in fact he dabbled with the jazz tracks in here as well, i never liked them at first… but they grew on me, and i rate the new album at * out of 10.. peace. love . and harmony xxx

I often disagree with album reviews on COS, but you pretty much nailed it. Love Gilmour, but this is a half-cooked effort. Seems like his love of good food had inspired him to make restaurant music. Few glimmers of genius on this. Certainly don’t begrudge his lovely wife, but her lack of musical background waters things down, pun not intended. His vocal melodies and application of lyrics to rhythms have been spotty the last couple decades, excluding On An Island. This suffers the maladies of latter-day Floyd. Still going to the Hollywood Bowl shows, but I am thankful that RTL comprises less than half the length of a standard Gilmour set.

I am sticking up for an honest review. Just be truthful and all is good. Normally I wouldn’t bother but I threw down on this one. This site is great for getting info first. Like tour info ect. But not for reviews at all. You say he makes “old man music” i don’t know why i even bother commenting. I don’t know man, I think it’s pretty cool that a 69 year old man is still in the top 5 percent of of guitarists in the world. “Old man music” Like the solo in “In Any Tongue”. Old man music that is scoring high mark reviews everywhere but here. Go see a show on his current tour and let me know how old he sounds when he plays guitar. Don’t forget to bring an extra pair of skivvies. You will need it when he overloads your sensorium and you sh*t in your underwear. His voice is still great as well. His music is great. He is just punished because he was amazing in his great old band, pink floyd. People expect certain sounds and old floyd like stuff. Like ummagumma type stuff. And they punish him for moving away from that. They don’t keep it about his music. They make it personal. Your still getting great music but unfortunately it is jaded by a past experience. People can not let go. It was that good of a band. So like i was saying, someone who knows music and is unbiased should give the review. Not a Roger Waters ummagumma wall fan. Cut the BS

Brad,

All these negative, angry reactions towards someone who “dared” to give the album a “C+” and say things a whole lot of people who are not rabid Gilmour/Floyd fans anymore, would say about him any time.

I love the old Floyd stuff, and some of Gilmour’s early solo stuff is pretty good, but his music today is boring, old man music you’ll eventually hear on a grocery store rotation for years.

But it’s great if you enjoy it.

“Rattle That Lock,” the song, will be played on grocery store rotational Muzak mixes for years to come.

Gilmour has moved into new musical territories in this album and has shown amazing range as a musician. Expecially with this album. This music does not feel old or reused at all. Whoever wrote this is bitter and is still holding on to Floyd and needs to let go. It’s over. What more could you ask for from a solo album. He wrote the music for this album in a room by himself. And he now will go perform it in front of thousands of people. That is amazing to me. Stop punishing this album and this amazing artist because it did not meet your expectations. Did you want to sound like something he has already done. Did you want him to drop shrooms and make ummgumma 2. You want the old stuff, then go listen to the old stuff. I love this album. This is a dishonest article. Weed out the trash CoS
