On this episode of Going There, Dr. Mike gets deep with singer-songwriter and musician Noah Kahan about his mental health journey, including his experience with feelings of anxiety and depression.
A quickly rising voice in the indie folk world, Kahan has established himself as a powerhouse songwriter, festival favorite, and, as of his latest single, even Post Malone-collaborator. His profile only seems to be growing, but that doesn’t mean his mental health challenges have been left in the rear view mirror.
Kahan talks of his experiences with anxiety and depression, as well as the other feelings and thoughts that come along with them. He also details his history with psychiatric medication like antidepressants and his feelings surrounding others’ biases.
“For me, what is mostly important, is being able to wake up in the morning and exist in the world in a way that allows you to get out of bed,” he explains. “There are baseline needs that a person has, and for me, that’s being able to get out of bed, being able to be social and to experience socializing, and to feel like I can exist. And there have been a lot times in my life that without the kickstart medication gave me, I don’t think I’d be able to do that.”
