To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sublime, we got Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh to speak with superfan comedian/podcaster/The Late Late Show with James Corden head writer Ian Karmel about the classic album for our artist-on-artist interview series Peer 2 Peer.
Released on this very day, July 30th, back in 1996, Sublime would be both the defining album from the Long Beach raggae rockers as well as their final effort. Tracks like “What I Got,” “Wrong Way,” and “Caress Me Down” are as ubiquitous today as they were over two decades ago. Meanwhile, artists like Lana Del Rey and Post Malone are introducing Sublime to new audiences via respective covers like “Doin’ Time” and “Santeria.”
Unfortunately, the loss of Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell to heroin ended the band’s ascension just as it truly began. While the project would never be the same, their legacy was secured and is still being celebrated by fans today. To mark the 25th anniversary of Sublime, the surviving members are releasing a number of promotional products, including a graphic novel, a limited edition beer, new music videos, a dub remix album from the legendary Scientist and Mad Professor, a Travis Barker remix project, and so much more.
In this episode of Peer 2 Peer, Gaugh tells Karmel all about the anniversary, shares stories from album’s recording sessions, and reminisces about the height of the band’s fame. Karmel, meanwhile, geeks out about getting the chance to talk to one of his favorite musicians of all time. Check it all out in the video above.
